Dr. Tom Humble, Principal, Raleigh Charter High School
Raleigh Charter High School (RCHS) is annually ranked in the top 100 high schools in the US by both Newsweek and US News & World Report. Both magazines use student participation and performance in Advanced Placement courses (AP) to determine these rankings. Dr. Humble will talk about how RCHS approaches AP science learning, how RCHS moves so many students into AP courses very early in their high school careers, and how the school works to ensure student success once in these challenging courses.
Ms. Tamica Stubbs, Society for Science & the Public Fellow
Tamica Stubbs teaches biology in Charlotte and has won innumerable awards, including semi-finalist for national biotechnology teacher of the year from the Biotechnology Institute, and the Society for Science & the Public (SSP) Fellows Program, an Intel-funded fellowship. Tamica will discuss her new science research course, which guides students in underserved communities in independent scientific research, aiming them at Intel's annual Talent Science Search award.
Mr. Karl Rectanus, NC STEM Collaborative
Karl Rectanus directs a new initiative out of MCNC.The NC STEM Community Collaborative helps communities throughout North Carolina ensure that all students engage in rigorous & relevant science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education that provides them with good choices in life and bolsters the economic strength of their communities. Karl will talk about their early successes in aiming community collaboratives towards excellence in STEM career preparation.
